        Merit Financial – $20 Liberty

In the mid 1800′s, the official price of gold was around twenty dollars per ounce. As such, the US Mint released the first Twenty Dollar Gold Coin in 1849, which contained Point Nine-six-seven-five (0.9675) ounces of pure gold. The Twenty Dollar Liberty or “Double Eagle” as it was called, was the largest gold coin produced by the mint. It was stuck from 1849 through 1907, when it was replaced by the newly designed Twenty Dollar Saint Gaudens. Each coin depicts the bust of Lady Liberty on the obverse, with the bald eagle standing wings apart behind the national seal on the reverse. Twenty Dollar Liberty coins are available in three major varieties, otherwise known as “types”. Like most collectable coins, they come in a variety of grades and descriptions relating to the quality and preservation of the coin. Their value varies widely by date, type, and most importantly condition. These coins in lower grades are favored by investors looking for a low cost option, while the higher grades tend to bring high premiums from collectors and investors alike.
